Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We have been in business since 1997.
What is your primary product or service?
Our Facility specializes in the treatment and diagnosis of prostate cancer. We focus on prostate brachytherapy (seed implants) and transperineal mapping biopsies of the prostate.
Our facility is filled with the newest and most technically advanced equipment and offers a light-filled environment where patients and families can feel comfortable. Since we specialize in only one treatment, our staff is highly skilled. We have treated over 12,000 patients from all over the US and world. Our medical director is considered a prostate cancer and brachytherapy expert throughout the medical community. He has authored numerous publications in medical journals and textbooks on prostate cancer, and speaks at professional meetings throughout the world.
Seed implants are a minimally invasive, one time out-patient procedure, with superior cure rates and minimal side effects allowing patients to resume normal activity within days. Cure rates in low risk patients are equal to or better than surgery or external beam radiation (EBRT). For intermediate and high-risk patients, brachytherapy combined with EBRT has resulted in superior outcomes when compared to surgery. When looking at urinary side effects, incontinence rates are usually less than 1%. For surgery, rates can be as high as 10%. Regarding sexual function, approximately 6-25% of patients who receive brachytherapy may experience a decrease in sexual function versus approximately 50% of patients who undergo surgery. Erectile medications and other aids have proven to be very effective. When comparing bowel function between brachytherapy (seed implant) and EBRT, patients undergoing prostate brachytherapy experience much lower rates of bowel irritation with prostate brachytherapy.
The transperineal biopsy (sometimes misnamed as a saturation biopsy) is a comprehensive biopsy performed under general anesthesia, where tissue samples are taken through the perineum versus the rectum. With the transperineal biopsy, a higher number of tissue samples are obtained and unlike the rectal biopsy, the entire prostate can be sampled with the perineal method. There is an area of the prostate, called the apex, that cannot be reached transrectally and often the cancer is missed and the patient goes undiagnosed. The rectal biopsy also results in a high risk of septic infection and men often have to be treated for this infection and at times hospitalized. Finally, with the transperineal approach, we are diagnosing cancer in approximately 40% of patients who have had a negative transrectal biopsy, but a continued rising PSA; cancer that would have otherwise gone undetected.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Dr. Brian Moran is a radiation oncologist. Before CPC was established he was doing seed implants in the hospital. It was a nightmare. The staff was not trained in seed implants-making the procedure more difficult. You have to coordinate this procedure with a radiation oncologist, urologist, anesthesiologist, physicist, ultrasonographer and nursing staff. Often cases were cancelled because no one could coordinate the staff. Operating room times were longer than necessary also. Dr. Moran said we needed a facility dedicated to this procedure. Got investors and here we are today. We have excellent results and train and proctor physicians on this procedure.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Because we specialize in one prostate cancer treatment we have become the leaders in this field. We have separate research department that looks at our clinical results and often lectures at national and international prostate cancer meetings. We do more procedures than anyone in the world and treat men with this disease from all over the world. We are also freestanding and have no hospital affiliation.
