Sustainable landscape design and installation
Bedrock Earthscapes is committed to enriching life through improving our environment. We use native plants and sustainable water conservation methods to design, install and/or convert existing landscapes into environmentally sustainable, cost effective earthscapes. The result is a setting for your business or organization that increases beauty and bio-diversity, uses less energy, wastes less water, costs less to maintain and enriches life.
Triple Bottom Line
Good stewardship makes good business sense. Sustainable site practices provide you with triple bottom line benefits:
• Economic - Maintenance expense for areas converted to native plantings is reduced. The conversion to native plant material is typically paid for out of savings from your existing maintenance expenditures.
• Environmental – Native areas require less fertilizer, herbicide, fuel and labor to maintain. They add beauty and biodiversity. Native plants also have deep roots that absorb water and help reduce site runoff. Green walls, green roofs and rain water collection systems reduce energy and water consumption while contributing to more effective bio-regulation of local environments.
• Social – Corporate Social Responsibility is visibly demonstrated by your native plantings and sustainable site practices as you use less resource and produce fewer pollutants.
Our services include:
• Use of native plantings to increase beauty, bio-diversity, improve surface drainage and improve air quality. Using native plantings in the landscape will help you reduce cost, enhance beauty, and make a statement about your commitment to good stewardship.
• Soil modification and balancing to reduce chemical use and water waste.
• Hardsurface shading using trees and green walls to reduce cooling costs and urban heat effect.
• Surface and roof water collection, use and reuse including cisterns, bio-swales and rain gardens to reduce pollutant runoff and to reduce potable water use in the landscape.
• Permeable hardscapes that reduce site water run-off and infrastructure costs.
• Green roofs that help reduce water run-off, energy consumption and urban heat island effect.
• Inclusion of harvestable edible plants where possible.
Why not allow us to explain our services to you in more detail, and then to take the first no-cost step of performing a site evaluation?

Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Bedrock was first established in 1974. It was re-established in 2008 as Bedrock Earthscapes, LLC. Our purpose is to "Enrich life through caring for our environment".
What is your primary product or service?
Our primary service is the conversion of traditional, high input landscapes into more sustainable earthscapes using a variety of sustainable site practices. The result is a more beautiful and sustainable landscape that provides the triple bottom line benefits of lower cost, environmental improvement and a tangible demonstration of corporate social responsibility.
We do this through native plantings, rain water reuse and landscape features that contribute to building energy reduction.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
As owner of Bedrock Earthscapes, I am a Registered Landscape Architect with more that 35 years of experience in cost effective landscape maintenance. My interest in the field of sustainable landscapes was started as a youth through soil and water conservation activities in Scouting. I then studied plant sciences in college and did research on plants that could be used for derelict land reclaimation. Stewardship of the earth has always been at the core of Bedrock Earthscapes.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Bedrock Earthscapes is focused on sustainable site practices. Technologies exist today that have been overlooked by most landscape companies. Mowing, fertilization and herbicide use has been used to compensate for a lack of knowledge about creating habitats where plants want to grow using much lower resource input. We believe landscapes can and should be beautiful AND be good for the environment.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We work out of a single location in DuPage county. Our business model calls for keeping our business close and travel to a minimum to reduce fuel and to keep our overhead low. We believe we need to practice what we preach and use a business model that is sensible and sustainable.
Which areas do you service?
Our present market focus is Dupage County with some business in Will and Kane Counties.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Bedrock Earthscapes is owner operated. Effective sustainable site practices require expertise that does not come with a mow and blow crew. Our service is personal, knowledgable and responsive.
