Why choose Earth-Friendly Moving Inc?
We chose innovation over wage-demolition for your protection a long time ago:
The decision to convert our moving vans to run on recycled cooking oil had as much to do with attracting expert-level movers and minimizing turnover as reducing greenhouse emissions.
When Naperville-native Patrick R. Kuhn relocated to Charlotte NC to form CMTR Moving Services LLC in late 2005, early 2006, and later Lake Norman Moving Services LLC, he determined the prevailing wage by calling established moving companies. Manager after manager said, "$9.00 an hour for movers, $13.00 an hour for local drivers," with an authority that sounded more like a command than a suggestion.
Surprisingly enough, movers wandered into his office to apply. While many had ricocheted from one moving company to the next since high school, few seemed eager to accept the jobs they applied for. Sometimes they showed up for work. Sometimes not. When damage claims arose, few seemed concerned. They shrugged as if to imply Management was at fault. The most experienced and competent didn't hesitate to say so.
"Cheap movers aren't cheap," he admits learning the hard way.
What Mr. Kuhn also knew was that diesel-dependent trucks—including moving vans, of course—consume staggering sums of fuel. It's their secondary function. To illustrate, a tractor-trailer transporting household goods from Charlotte NC 831 miles to Naperville IL consumed 130 to 140 gallons of diesel, not including idle time. At $3.49 per gallon, that was $500 recouped via fuel surcharge—and $500 out of the Company's coffers to bring the moving van back.
That $500 to bring the moving van back had to come from somewhere if Mr. Kuhn expected the Company to survive—and he quickly deduced it was coming out of his employees' pockets at the risk of the Company's long term reputation for providing quality service.
With rising fuel costs depressing wages, he rationalized, the quality of service any diesel-dependent moving company provided would diminish as entry- and mid-level movers secured higher paying positions elsewhere unless he raised rates in a fiercely competitive market.
Or he could implement a better idea—and that's what he did.
In the months that followed Mr. Kuhn risked bankruptcy converting his small but growing fleet of moving vans to run on recycled cooking oil while simultaneously driving up the prevailing wage. As entry- and mid-level movers overslept for obvious reasons, expert-level movers jumped at the opportunity to replace them. They arrived on time, every time. Damage claims ceased. Spirits improved dramatically. In no time the Company's reputation for providing expert-level service at a reasonable price surged throughout Lake Norman, Charlotte, the NASCAR community and beyond.
In 2008, when diesel rose to $4.00 per gallon, he slashed the fuel surcharge in half while raising the prevailing wage $5.00 per hour to prove a point. When diesel skyrocketed to $4.89 per gallon, he waved it altogether to drive that point home. When mile for mile your moving vans consume less petroleum than America's favorite hybrid, you're the only North Carolina mover who can do that.
When CNN asked what impact a business strategy deemed suicidal by many had on the market since the initial interview, Mr. Kuhn chuckled, "My clients love everything about it. As for my competitors, well, I get the distinct feeling I rank among the least popular," which will likely continue now that he's relocated back to Naperville to establish a company with a more vision-appropriate name: Earth-Friendly Moving Inc.
"Charlotte is a beautiful city," Mr. Kuhn says. "Naperville is home. This is where I belong. This is where Earth-Friendly Moving Inc belongs."
We look forward to the spring of 2011, when we shall begin placing the balance of our fleet back in service under the new company name here in Naperville—tractor trailers capable of running from Chicago to Denver without relying on diesel to get there.
